Your dog loves spending time with you. You love a well-mannered dog. In this class, you both win. You will teach your dog sit, down, loose leash walking (There’s a human at the other end of the leash?), stay, wait, come when called, touch and, most important, how to pay attention. By the last class, you may even be able to speak “Dog” as a second language.

If your dog already knows the basics, this class will offer new challenges. We will add distractions, pair cues like "come when called" with "leave it", and ask for longer stays. You will learn to keep your dog’s attention, even if tempted by another dog, a human or a favorite toy. Prerequisite: An introductory class or equivalent skills using positive methods.

Get an early start on socialization and training. This class includes training in name recognition, sit, down, wait, come-when-called, and leash walking. You will learn how to teach your puppy to greet without jumping up, accept being handled, and reduce the "bite" in the dreaded (but normal) puppy play biting. A period of supervised “puppy playtime” will build your pup’s confidence around other dogs and people. Every week, a topic of importance to puppy owners will be discussed and questions answered.

Trick training is a terrific way to exercise your dog's brain and body (he needs that), improve his behavior around the house (you want that), dazzle your friends and enhance the dog/owner relationship. All students will teach their dogs a few foundation skills (attention, targeting, take & give, the tap, go-to-your-mat, go find) and then use these new skills to teach their dog several tricks of their own choosing. Prerequisite: Completion of a puppy or basic class or equivalent skills; handler at least 13 yrs. old; dog at least 6 mo. old and comfortable in a class setting.

This class will help prepare you and your dog to take the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test, which evaluates your dog's basic skills of sit, down, stay, recall and loose leash walking, plus the ability to permit handling by a friendly stranger and to pass a friendly dog without reacting. Practice all ten exercises of the test, so you and your dog will be ready. Dogs that pass the CGC test qualify for a handsome certificate from AKC declaring them Good Canine Citizens. Prerequisite: sit; down; stay (10 sec); recall (10 ft); walk without pulling.
Your Dog's Friend will host a CGC test on Sunday, February 22 that will be open to anyone in the community. The fee for testing is a $20 donation (recommended amount) to the Washington Animal Rescue League.

This is an independent class taught at Capital Dog Training Club in Silver Spring and run by Alfhild Winder (Come When Called Dog Training). The goal of the class is to develop the tools to walk your dog on leash in public without his barking or lunging at the various other dogs you will encounter. The class is NOT for dogs that are afraid of people or for dogs with a history of serious injurious bites to other dogs. Although the application and fee go directly to the instructor, Your Dog's Friend provides administrative support and can send you the appropriate application. For more information and an application, contact administrator@yourdogsfriend.info or 301-983-5913. |
